The Department of Statistics is one of the oldest departments of the Centre functioning from its inception. The primary mission of the department is to provide a focus of statistical expertise for the Centre's research community at large and to foster research and statistical education among biostatisticians and epidemiologists and medical researchers. The mission of the department is to b ringing biostatistical expertise to a wide spectrum of health-related problems, advancing knowledge in biostatistics and health through educational programs for applied researcher and providing leadership and outstanding scholarship in research, teaching, and service.
Recognized experts in biostatistics and computational biology, the department's active researchers widely published in their fields; collectively they attract external research funding annually. Areas of expertise in biostatistics include survival analysis, HIV/AIDS modeling, Bayesian inference, computational molecular biology, machine learning, causal inference, statistical genetics, and longitudinal data analysis. An almost unique feature of the department is the extent to which it is integrated with the day-to-day research activities of the other departments. Over the years, this is resulted in the development of healthy and profitable relationship between biostatisticians and scientists from other disciplines, which is an essential requisite for effective medical research. The department is recognized for conducting PhD programmes by the University of Madras and three other Universities. The Scientists of the department also provide guidance to M.Sc/M.Tech/ M.Phil students from other institutes for their project works.
